Grooming is a lifelong commitment for poodles. Let me tell you about our introduction process & product suggestions to help achieve success in this endeavor.
The Poodle's Special Trait.
Poodles are a very special breed with an equally special trait. They have hair rather than fur! The difference in hair is that it continuously grows just like peoples' hair. They also do not "shed" or have undercoat like the majority of dog breeds. This makes them especially appealing to those with allergies. Poodles have been known to have less dander as well. You would think with all of the pros to their hair that there must be a con. It is often thought that the con is the continuous bi-monthly grooming that they require. However, I am here to tell you that it doesn't have to be a big burden. Poodles are very versatile dogs, not only in their lifestyle adaptability but also in the haircuts they can have. If you like a low maintenance cut that can stretch 10-12 weeks with little to no brushing go with #5 blade all over or if you enjoy a fun challenge you can go with a high maintenance continental cut. That's not even the best part! The best part is you can always switch up the style and level of maintenance. If your time is restricted, your budget is tight, or you're in a muddy season you can go short + easy, then if you want change, change the cut! As long as your poodle is kept mat free with healthy skin and clean ears, there is no wrong cut choice you can make!

Young Introduction Pays Off

Our Puppy Grooming Intro
1
Initial Intro
The very first introduction to grooming practices is kept short and sweet. We will run the dryer while the puppies nurse from mom. This helps associate the loud noise with a positive experience. Using a vibrating tooth brush to rub on the puppy's mouth is my favorite way to do clipper introduction. We do ENS with our puppies which includes tickling the paws with a Q-tip. The most important thing at this young age is to not overdo exposure and create fear.
2
2-4 weeks
Every litter progresses a little differently, just like children. Some litters are hardy at 2 weeks while others are not yet in the safe zone until around 4 weeks. When I can tell that the puppies are strong and have enough confidence I start using the clippers on their face with a #3o blade to get them used to having a "clean face". It is so fun to see what coloring they have underneath their fuzzy faces. Often a phantom will reveal bigger markings and merle will show cute speckles and contrast. Sometimes I will also start using the dryer on their bodies at this age, but I am sure to keep it quick and as low stress as possible with a lot of reassurance to them.
3
6-7 weeks
By 6-7 weeks old every puppy has experienced bathing, blow drying, nail trimming, ear cleaning, face shaving, sanitary area shaving and in some cases feet shaving. Grooming can tell a lot about a puppy's personality. The sweet affectionate puppies tend to be more relaxed and sometimes will even fall asleep, puppies with a reserved observant type personality often have the potential to either whine more or accept their situation so it's important to give these puppies extra reassurance. Puppies that are more outgoing and independent will typically be the more strong willed ones that try to squirm away. Some of these more spunky puppies will find it enjoyable and fun if they have enough confidence. Grooming them so young really makes all the difference for their lifelong commitment to these practices and your groomer will appreciate it.
